14 sailors flew to Ukraine after three years in a prison in Libya
A special flight landed at Boryspil International Airport with 14 Ukrainian citizens – crew members of the oil tanker Ruta, who returned home after more than three years in prison in Libya.
This was reported by the press service of the President’s Office.
“It is our task – to remove the Ukrainian citizens. I am very pleased that the 14 crew members of the oil tanker Ruta, who were behind bars in Libya, have returned home. I am happy for them, for their families, ”said President Vladimir Zelensky.
He noted that the sailors returned home after almost three and a half years.
The Head of State thanked for the fruitful work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the security service of Ukraine, as well as all those who care about it.
As reported, in April 2017, Libyan naval forces seized two ships with weapons, one of which – the oil tanker Ruta – was flying the Ukrainian flag. Libyan authorities arrested Ruta’s crew, 14 Ukrainians, for the illegal transportation of oil. The tanker is state-owned and located in the rest of the port of Odessa. Since 2005, the ship has been leased to charterer Manchester Shipping S.A.
According to international maritime conventions, crew members are only responsible for the delivery of goods and are not responsible for licenses and permits for the transport of goods. The cargo owner is responsible for this.

All instructions from the owner Ruta were received by the captain’s computer by e-mail. After the arrest on April 27, 2017, the computer was seized by the Libyans and the crew were unable to prove their innocence.
First, the sailors were detained in one of the Tripoli prisons, and then they were transferred to Tajur.
The investigation ended 8 months after the arrest. They had neither a court nor a conviction, only incriminated articles. The 14 crew members were in a cramped room, had to sleep in turn. The conditions of detention and the constant psychological pressure affected the health of the seafarers. Two have hepatitis. A few others have exacerbated chronic diseases.
On April 29, the Tripoli Court of Appeal decided to modify the preventive measure for the crew of the oil tanker Ruta. A few days ago, after paying the deposit, they were transported to the town of Misurata.
