Former King of Spain Juan Carlos I and his son Philippe VI
This week, Spanish prosecutors launched an investigation into former king Juan Carlos I, 82, suspected of corruption when concluding contracts with national companies for the construction of the railway in Saudi Arabia. First, prosecutors will have to determine whether it is possible to prosecute the ex-monarch if, until 2014 (he abdicated this year), he had immunity.
King Philip VI and King Juan Carlos I
In 2014, Juan Carlos I gave the crown to his son, Philip VI, who had recently renounced his inheritance due to a financial scandal surrounding his father. The press has described King Philippe as the beneficiary of the alleged offshore fund allegedly created by his father in 2008 to receive tens of millions of dollars. After refusing the inheritance, the king’s son deprived his father of an annual state pension of $ 215,000.
The construction of the transport system between the cities of Mecca and Medina lasted from 2009 to 2018. The prosecution now checks the receipt of construction contracts by Spanish companies. The investigation is carried out not only by Spanish lawyers, but also by their Swiss colleagues.
