Ukraine awaits the announcement of the date of the meeting of the Italian Court of Appeal in the case of the National Guard Vitaliy Markiv after the completion of the quarantine in Italy in the framework of COVID-19.

Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said this, speaking for an hour to the government in parliament, said a correspondent for Ukrinform.

“We expect the end of the quarantine in Italy as part of COVID-19, when they will announce the meeting of the court of appeal, where, we are sure, we have very good positions,” said Avakov.

He added that Ukraine will continue to make diplomatic efforts to release Markiv at the intergovernmental level.

The minister recalled that last year the national police resumed the investigation into the murder of Italian photographer Adrea Roccelli.

“A few weeks ago, an investigative experiment was carried out which fully proves that Markiv could not be involved, even physically, even at a distance from this murder. Therefore, we try and believe that Markiv will be released. I want this to happen in the next few months. ” – stressed the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

As reported, on May 25, a group of experts from the Kiev Forensic Research Institute and the Kiev Polytechnic Institute conducted an investigation in Slavyansk as part of the criminal proceedings of the national police on the circumstances of the death of Italian photographer Rokelli and Russian translator Andrei Mironov on May 24, 2014.

Combatant Markiv was arrested in Italy in the summer of 2017, accused of being involved in the death of Italian photojournalist Roccelli on May 24, 2014 in the Slavyansk region of the Donetsk region.

On July 12, 2019, a Pavian court sentenced a Ukrainian to 24 years in prison. Markiv’s defense described the verdict as political and announced its intention to appeal. The lawyers later said that a court of appeal decision was expected in the spring of 2020.

President Vladimir Zelensky instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the GPU to do everything possible to send Markiv back to his country of origin.
