Defenders of Onishchenko to appoint free lawyer due to ‘absenteeism’
WAX instructed the Regional Center for the Provision of Free Secondary Legal Aid in Kiev to appoint free lawyers for the potential gas project organizer and his accomplice.

It should be noted that on May 5, a preparatory session of the court was to be held at VAKS in the framework of criminal proceedings on the accusations of the former deputy, the alleged organizer of the “gas schemes” and his accomplice .
“However, the meeting had to be postponed due to the absence of three defenders. The WAKS panel of judges judged the reasons for his disrespect and instructed the Regional Center to provide free secondary legal assistance in Kiev to appoint free lawyers for the two defendants, “the statement said.
The next meeting is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on May 6, 2020.
The court recalled that on January 21, the WAKS panel of judges had authorized to initiate special legal proceedings (by default) in the case of the probable organizer of “gas schemes” and his accomplice.

As indicated, the former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Onishchenko fled Ukraine in the summer of 2016. He is accused of having created a criminal organization, whose members from January 2013 to June 2016 illegally earned more than 1.6 billion UAH in the sale of natural gas. As a result of these actions, the PJSC “Ukrgazvidobuvannya” (100% of the shares belong to the state-owned company NAK Naftogaz Ukrainy) caused damage in the amount of more than UA 740 million.
The investigation established the involvement of 29 people in the “gas project”. Among them, two people who played the role of organizers, the others are employees of Ukrgazvidobuvannya OJSC, a lawyer, financiers, business leaders, etc.
Eight suspects pleaded guilty and pleaded guilty in the preliminary inquiry. An investigation into the role of 12 other people was also completed, and charges were laid against them. Seven suspects, including Onishchenko, are wanted.
At the same time, on December 3, 2019, it became known that Onishchenko was arrested in Germany on November 29 at the request of the Ukrainian law enforcement authorities.
On February 11, 2020, Onishchenko’s lawyer said that the former MP had requested political asylum in Germany.
