Following the exchange of detainees on Thursday, a total of 38 people were released, 34 of whom were transferred.

This was reported by the press service of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ukraine (ICRC).

“Since the start of the conflict, this is the fourth operation to release and transfer detainees, in which the ICRC has participated as a neutral intermediary. Today, 38 people have been released, 34 of them they have been transferred, some have been in detention for six years. Their desire to be confirmed in advance has been transmitted, “the report said.

The ICRC said that its representatives participated in the operation to simultaneously release and transfer the detainees in order to “confirm the detainees’ consent to the transfer and to ensure that the operation was carried out in accordance with international humanitarian standards”.

It should be noted that such operations for the release and transfer of detainees have significant humanitarian value.

“Thanks to them, people are returning to their families on both sides of the contact line. This indicates that even during conflict and in the most difficult and difficult times, humanity can prevail. And humanity in a conflict is exactly the idea that the ICRC has been promoting all over the world for 157 years, “the organization said.

At the same time, the ICRC noted that under the threat of a new coronavirus disease, it was necessary to take the appropriate measures and assured that the operation had ended without problems, and that soon the detainees released would return home, only all necessary preventive procedures related to the COVID-19 epidemic would be completed. .

The ICRC added that in the near future, they will be able to meet their families, which is very important in the context of the current pandemic.

As noted, an exchange of detainees took place on Thursday. Ukraine has returned 20 of its captive citizens to the temporarily occupied territories of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

The office of the President of Ukraine said that negotiations were underway on the release of those detained in occupied Crimea and Russia.
