Easter - in the top 3 most favorite holidays of Ukrainians

In Ukraine, more than 79% of Ukrainians consider Christmas the most popular official holiday, 77% – Easter and 74% – New Year. The next ranking is International Women’s Day, which 40% love.

Witness the data from a pan-Ukrainian survey conducted by the International Institute of Sociology in Kiev (KIIS).

“The study showed that in general, Ukrainians treat holidays with love and respect; only 2% of those questioned consider any official holiday to be important or loved. The most popular official holiday of Ukrainians is: Christmas – 79 %; Easter (Hristovo Sunday) – 77%; New Year – 74%, International Women’s Day – 40%; Victory Day – 33%; Trinidad – 31%; Independence Day of Ukraine – 19 %, “said the poll in a press release.

According to KIIS sociologists, compared to 2018 (in the 2019 survey, the question of holidays was not raised), the number of those who consider Easter as their favorite holiday has decreased – from 82% to 77%, Christmas – from 81% to 79%, New Year – from 79% to 74%, International Women’s Day – from 45% to 40% and Trinity – from 35% to 31%.

Regarding regional preferences, the largest number of those who consider religious holidays important are concentrated in the western region (Christmas is most loved for 88%, Easter – 86%, Trinidad – 50%), but in the Eastern region, Christmas was called favorite – 72%, Easter – 69%, Trinidad – 21%. In the southern regions, respectively – 75%, 78%, 26%; in the Center – 76%, 73%, 24%.

New Years Eve is the most popular holiday in the East region (88%) and the South – 82% in the Center – this holiday has 72% of supporters, and least in the West region – 63%.

As noted, the least popular official holidays of Ukrainians are the Defender of Ukraine Day (13%), International Workers’ Solidarity Day (11%) and Constitution Day (7%).

However, in the past two years, the number of those who consider Ukraine Independence Day as their favorite vacation (from 16% to 19%) and the Defender of Ukraine day (from 11% to 13%) increased.

At the same time, Defender’s Day of Ukraine is relatively more popular in the western region (15%), the lowest figure in the eastern region (10%). In the Center and South regions, this figure is 13% and 12% respectively.

The independence day of Ukraine is most respected in the western region (30%), and especially – in the eastern region (11%). The central and southern regions in relation to this holiday are closer to the East – 17% and 14% respectively.

International Women’s Day is more celebrated in the East (56%) and South (55%) regions, in the West, it has only 25% of its supporters, in the Center – 36%.

Victory Day is the most respected and appreciated in the South and East regions (50% and 64%, respectively), and especially – in the West (9%); in the Center region, 25% of those questioned consider it important.

As for Constitution Day, among the important public holidays, it was named in the East region by 2% of respondents, in the West – 9%, in the Center and South regions also – 7% .

The survey was conducted from February 8 to February 18, 2020; 2,038 respondents living in 110 colonies from all regions of Ukraine (except Crimea) were interviewed in a personal interview using a 4-step stochastic sample representative of the Ukrainian population over 18 years of age. In the Lugansk and Donetsk regions, the investigation was carried out only in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.

The statistical error of the sample (with a probability of 0.95 and with a design effect of 1.5) does not exceed: 3.3% for indicators close to 50%, 2.8% for indicators close to 25%, 2.0% for indicators close to 10%, 1.4% – for indicators close to 5%.
