Eastern rite Christians celebrate the Annunciation

Eastern rite Christians celebrate the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on April 7, one of the main festivals of the Orthodox calendar.

It is reported by Ukrinform.

This feast has been celebrated since the 4th century and is dedicated to the event described in the Gospel by the apostle Luke. The archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary his imminent birth of Jesus Christ – the Son of God and Savior of the world. The Archangel’s words were the first good news, not only for the Virgin Mary, but for all of humanity after her fall, that is to say since the time of Adam and Eve.

The Church teaches that Blessed Mary not only discovered that she was going to have a child, but also gave her consent, and it was when she said the words: “I am the handmaid of the Lord, that it be done to me according to your word “, and the miracle of the immaculate conception has occurred.

At the Annunciation, fasting is allowed to eat fish. On that day, people brought seeds to the temple to sanctify them for future planting, as it was believed that God blessed the earth during the Annunciation.

From time immemorial in Ukraine, rural communities have come together at the Annunciation, during which they decided who and when will treat the fields of widows and orphans. There was a custom that the first spring plowing began in families where there was no owner. They did this work with the help of a crowd, that is to say collectively and without payment. And there was also a custom that day to release the will of the birds from cages.
