EU allocates € 190 million to Ukraine to fight coronavirus

The European Union will provide Ukraine with € 190 million as part of a joint package of assistance to the Eastern Partnership countries to fight the coronavirus epidemic.

According to information published on the European Commission website, as part of the Team Europe efforts, the EU will mobilize € 80 million as emergency aid for the Eastern Partnership countries . These documents are expected to be distributed to the Eastern Partnership countries in the coming weeks.

The European Union will also provide € 11.3 million in small grants to support civil society, for example, for projects related to the organization of distance education, as well as to help non-governmental organizations which support the most vulnerable segments of the population.

The European Commission will also allocate € 100 million to support small and medium-sized enterprises in the Eastern Partnership countries, by redirecting existing financial instruments, such as the European Sustainable Development Fund, to mitigate the impact of the socio-economic crisis. economy associated with the coronavirus epidemic.

At the same time, the EU will continue its bilateral cooperation programs, for which, for example, in Ukraine, particularly in the Donetsk region, the EU has delivered equipment for emergency medical centers, including 100 sets of personal protective equipment and over 70 liters of highly concentrated antiseptic substances.

Taking into account all the funds that will be redistributed on a bilateral basis, the total EU aid to the Eastern Partnership countries in the fight against the coronavirus will reach 962 million euros.

Prime Minister Denis Shmygal thanked the European Union for the decision to allocate more than € 190 million to Ukraine to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
