EU and five countries call on Cabinet to provide funding to public authorities

The European Union and five other countries have called on the Ukrainian government to provide adequate funding to the public.

This is stated in their statement, which posted the Japanese Embassy in Ukraine on Facebook.

“In times of crisis caused by Covid-19, public service broadcasting plays an important role in providing rapid, accurate and objective information to citizens. The EU, Germany, Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States supports the public and calls on all responsible parties to ensure that they are adequately funded to fulfill this mission. ” , – indicated in the declaration.

As indicated, the public broadcaster had previously asked the Cabinet of Ministers not to cut 480 million UAH in spending when it revised the state budget.

In particular, it was noted that the budget of the National Television and Public Radio Company of Ukraine in 2020 should amount to 1 billion 711 million 516 thousand UAH, and a decrease in the public budget of almost 480 million d ‘UAH, as well as the payment by the television and radio company of a public debt to Euronews in the amount of approximately 350 million UAH will result in a decrease in funding of 830 million UAH. “Following such a revision of the state budget, a country may find itself without a public broadcaster. Depriving funding for culture and the information sphere will lead to degradation and misinformation, which will become difficult challenges for our State, ”noted the appeal.

At the same time, Prime Minister Denis Shmygal announced on Sunday March 29 that the Cabinet of Ministers had left 1.2 billion UAH of funding for public activities in the state budget.

“I fully share the statement that the activity of public service broadcasting is particularly important in times of crisis. This is why the government allocates 1.2 billion hryvnia to finance the NSTU, which is more than what was planned in 2019. This year, Eurovision and the Olympic Games have already been canceled, for which funds additional funds have been budgeted for.
