Facebook will use the correct transliteration of the capital of Ukraine – Kiev, not Kiev.

This was announced on Facebook today in response to a request from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said.

“Social network engineers changed everything to use Kiev. Previously, if you wanted to mark our capital, the algorithm suggested Kiev as the first option by definition. From now on, it will be Kiev – the addresses and places where the capital of the city ‘Ukraine is mentioned will use such transliteration with Ukrainian, not Russian.

The same thing with registrations (places of visit marks). Users will see Kiev as the first offer. Even if you were looking for a non-existent Kiev, “writes Kuleba.

According to him, labels have already been fixed in the past and brands still exist – they cannot be changed “retroactively”. But from now on, our capital will be spelled correctly, and it’s such a correct spelling of Kiev that the social network will entice users.

As reported by Ukrinform, the #CorrectUA information campaign, launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, started in October 2018.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on foreign official institutions and commercial companies to abandon the use of names of Ukrainian cities on the basis of Russian transcription and to switch to the correct names: Kiev, Odessa, Kharkiv, Lviv, Zaporizhzhia. A flash mob #KyivNotKiev was launched as part of the campaign.
