From next year, final certification in mathematics is compulsory – MES
Compulsory UPE in mathematics, ensuring a qualitative study of mathematics, opening of the Science Museum – these activities and others are provided for in the plan for the year of teaching mathematics in Ukraine for the academic year 2020/2021, adopted by the government on June 25, 2020.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
“The international PISA-2018 study showed that 36% of our 15-year-old students do not reach the level of basic knowledge in mathematics. One of the initiatives designed to solve this problem was the announcement of the 2020/2021 school year as the Year of Mathematics Education. During this period we plan to introduce the most urgent and necessary innovations for children and educators, as well as to consolidate the view that each of us has the need for mathematics in everyday life. The activities of the Year of Mathematics will cover pre-school, general secondary, out-of-school, vocational and higher education, “said the Deputy Minister. Education and science of Ukraine Lyubomir Mandziy.
The Plan for the Year of Mathematical Education provides measures designed to provide students with equal access to mathematical studies and to apply modern technologies for teaching mathematics, to improve the support of educational process resources, to increase the motivation of students to study mathematics and its application in life and popularize mathematical education.

In particular, from May 2021, applicants for full general secondary education will pass the compulsory final state certification in the form of the UPE in mathematics.
According to the plan, during the 2020/2021 academic year, it is also planned: to increase the number of academic hours to study mathematics in the state standard for basic secondary education; introduce courses “Logic”, “Mathematical Logic” in the variable component of study programs 1-11; organize training courses for primary school teachers and pre-school educators on the use of legumes in the educational process; equipping schools and vocational schools providing full secondary education with equipment for classrooms and STEM laboratories; create a catalog of educational resources for the study of mathematics; expand the network of mathematical circles in general and extracurricular secondary schools; organize spaces for mathematical crossroads on the basis of universities with faculties (institutes) for teacher training.
In April 2021, there are also plans to create a free online math resource and develop appropriate content for students and teachers of math.
In June-August 2021, there are plans to organize summer “math schools” for teachers and students, and in November, there are plans to open a science museum.
The year of mathematics was announced in December 2019 during the presentation of national and international reports on the results of the international study on the quality of education PISA-2018. On January 30, 2020, President Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree “declaring the 2020/2021 school year the year of teaching mathematics in Ukraine”.
