Gang in Ukraine revealed stole 1,860 icons from country’s churches
Law enforcement officers from Ternopil exposed an interregional group of people who, during the period 2018-2020, stole 1,860 icons from churches in different regions of Ukraine.
This was reported by the press service of the Attorney General’s Office.
“Under the procedural direction of the Ternopil region prosecutor’s office, the investigation service of the main directorate of the national police of the region with the operational support of the strategic investigations directorate in the Ternopil region of the DSR of the National Police, the interregional group of people who, during the years 2018-2020, committed a number of thefts of icons from churches in different regions of Ukraine was exposed linked to the secret penetration into these premises. According to the investigation, the last theft took place on April 30, 2020 in a temple located in a village. Mikhailovka, Shargorod district, Vinnitsa region. Three icons from 1860 were stolen, which were later removed, ”says the report.
It should be noted that due to the coordinated actions of more than 70 law enforcement officers, more than 13 authorized searches were carried out in the cities of Odessa, Kiev and Khmelnitsky. According to their results, a large number of icons, criminal instruments, money, cars, etc. were revealed and seized.

According to the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the organizer and two perpetrators have been arrested. They were informed of suspicions of theft linked to entry into the premises, committed on a large scale (part 3, 4 of article 185 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code). Now the question arises as to the election of a constraint measure and the seizure of property against them.
In addition, other people are monitored for their involvement in the commission of these crimes.
