Government launches amnesty for 2-3,000 convicts

The Cabinet of Ministers has registered in the Verkhovna Rada a bill on the amnesty of prisoners (concerning the prevention of the spread of acute respiratory diseases COVID-19 caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2).

The corresponding bill No. 3397 was registered on April 27, but the text is still missing.

As previously reported, Minister of Justice Denis Malyuka said that the Department of Justice has drafted an amnesty bill.

According to him, the amnesty is proposed so as not to be made too radical and to release only those who are at liberty will not aggravate the penal situation. We are talking about two to three thousand people.

“Compared to those who remain (and that is around 50,000), it is not too much,” said the minister.
