The owner of a vegetable processing farm in the federal state of Upper Austria has closed 15 seasonal workers from Ukraine at their place of residence, fearing that they may be infected with coronavirus and could infect other workers.

The relevant information from the Austrian media was confirmed in a comment to the Ukrainian correspondent by the consul of the Ukrainian embassy in the Republic of Austria Miroslava Zinkevich.

“Yes, this information was confirmed in a conversation with me by Dr. Wolfgang Ecker, director of the Chamber of Workers of Upper Austria. According to him, the situation occurred and 15 seasonal workers from Ukraine were” put in quarantine “, as he said,” an unjust farmer “, – said the consul.

According to Zinkevich, the Ukrainians themselves did not turn to the Ukrainian embassy for help.

The incident occurred in a vegetable processing plant in Linz Land. The owner of the farm decided to temporarily close 15 seasonal workers from Ukraine, who, in his opinion, could be infected with a coronavirus, and there was therefore a threat of infection for the other workers. According to information provided by Ecker, 12 Ukrainians accepted such a restriction on freedom of movement, but the other three opposed it and therefore made a corresponding complaint to the farmer. Consequently, the land service for the protection of workers’ rights was linked to the situation.

Now the matter is under the control of the competent Austrian authorities. The Linz public prosecutor’s office investigates a suspicion of illegal deprivation of liberty

According to the Austrian media, earlier this farm in Linz Land was already becoming an object of inspection by the labor rights protection service: then the complaints concerned working hours – workers had to work up to 72 hours per week.

“We will continue to monitor the situation. It is under the control of the competent Austrian authorities. The director of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Workers said that he would contact us if assistance from the Ukrainian embassy was required” , noted Zinkevich.
