In January 2020, 621 people died from influenza and pneumonia in Ukraine, 27.7% less than during the same period in 2019.
This is reflected in the data on the number of deaths due to certain respiratory diseases in 2019 and January 2020, provided at the request of Ukrinform to the National Statistics Service.
According to the National Statistics Service, the number of deaths from influenza and pneumonia in January 2020 amounted to 621 people. In 2019, 908 people died from these diseases in Ukraine in January.
During the first month of this year, most of these cases were registered in the Dnipropetrovsk region – 59, in Kiev – 58, in Zaporizhzhya – 57, in Kharkov – 48.
The lowest number of deaths from influenza and pneumonia in the first month of the year was recorded in the Ivano-Frankivsk region – 4, as well as in the Sumy, Cherkasy and Chernivtsi regions – 9 respectively.

For comparison, in January 2019, the highest mortality from influenza and pneumonia was recorded in Kiev – 99 people, in the Dnipropetrovsk region – 88, in Zaporizhzhya – 71, in Kharkov – 66, in Donetsk – 66, in Chernigov – 55, in Kiev – 54.
For example, in Kiev and the Kiev region in January 2019, 143 people died from influenza and pneumonia compared to 92 in January 2020.
At the same time, according to data from the National Statistics Committee for 2019, mortality from pneumonia prevailed over mortality from influenza by 111 times.
Thus, last year in a number of regions, no deaths from influenza were recorded. These are in particular the regions of Vinnytsia, Volyn, Dnepropetrovsk, Transcarpathian, Kiev, Lugansk, Nikolaev, Ternopol, Kherson and Chernivtsi.
Most of the people in 2019 died from influenza in the Lviv region – 14 people, Kirovograd – 10, in the Chernihiv region – 8 people, in Kiev – 3.

At the same time, mortality from pneumonia in the past year has been recorded in all regions of Ukraine without exception. Especially in Kiev – 656 people, in the Dnipropetrovsk region – 532 people, in Donetsk – 503, in Kharkov – 604, in Zaporizhzhya – 454, in Kiev – 389, in Lviv – 357, in Odessa – 242, in Chernigov – 207 .
Fewer human lives claimed in 2019 for pneumonia in the Ivano-Frankivsk region – 56, Ternopol – 88.
In other regions, mortality from pneumonia last year ranged from 100 to 200 people on average.
As reported, since March 12, quarantine has been introduced in Ukraine due to the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus infection.
On the morning of April 1, in Ukraine, 669 confirmed cases of COVID-19 coronavirus. 17 people died from this disease.
