In Ukraine – Victory Day over Nazism in World War II
On Saturday May 9, Ukraine celebrates the day of victory over Nazism during the Second World War.
The day of the victory over Nazism in the Second World War is fixed in accordance with the law on the perpetuation of the victory over Nazism in the Second World War 1939-1945. The celebration of Victory Day over Nazism includes a recasting of the events of the Second World War, the destruction of Soviet historical myths, an honest dialogue around the complex pages of the past.
World War II began on September 1, 1939 with the Nazi German attack on Poland. On that day, German military aircraft bombed Lviv and other cities. Since September 17, the Soviet Union has become a participant in the Second World War alongside Germany. The Soviet army crossed the border of the Polish Republic and began military operations against the Polish army. According to a secret agreement with the Third Reich, the USSR occupied the eastern voivodeships of the Republic of Poland (the lands of western Ukraine and western Belarus).

It should be noted that Ukraine, not only among the former Soviet republics, but also of all the countries of the world, suffered the greatest losses during the years of this war. According to various estimates, between 8 million and 10 million people have died in Ukraine, including around 5 million civilians, 2.2 million have been taken to forced labor in Nazi Germany and 10 million have lost their homes. More than 700 cities and urban-type establishments, nearly 30,000 villages have been transformed into complete ruins.
Immigrants from Ukraine contributed significantly to the victory over Nazism. On the side of the United Nations, they fought in the armies of Great Britain and Canada – 45,000 people, Poland – 120,000, the USSR – about 6 million, the United States – 80,000 and France – 6,000, as well as in Ukraine even in the ranks of the UPA there were up to 100,000 people.

Today, we honor the memory of all those who fought Nazism, we underline the solidarity and militant brotherhood of all the United Nations, both of the stateless States and nations. At the same time, the focus should be shifted from the history of military operations to the history of specific people and abandon the celebration in favor of reverence.
For several years, the official symbol of the celebration of the Day of Victory over Nazism during the Second World War has been the red poppy flower – the universally accepted symbol of the celebration of memorable days.
