Infectious disease specialist, medical expert at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Ukraine, Yekaterina Bulavinova, noted that in the majority of patients with COVID-19, the disease proceeds as a normal viral infection: cough , fever and sometimes runny nose.
And it’s important not to miss the moment when a person needs oxygen support, she said in an interview with Ukrinform.
“In the majority of patients with COVID-19, the disease proceeds like a normal viral infection: cough, fever, runny nose sometimes. In addition to paracetamol, you really don’t need anything to lower the temperature and certain situational drugs, like nose drops or gargles. But since people with COVID-19 die from pneumonia, it is important not to miss the time when a person already needs oxygen support, ”said Bulavinova.
She clarified that this is not pulmonary ventilation – it is necessary in severe cases, but oxygen.
“It is also oxygen, which can be obtained through a mask and nasal cannulas, for example, from an oxygen concentrator or through a central supply of oxygen in the compartment. That is why so much has been done by the state, volunteers, donors, businessmen and chief physicians to provide oxygen to hospitals. I think this is the most important thing, but the doctors and the patients do not understand the situation, “said the infectious disease specialist.

Bulavinova noted that “patients are too focused on the tests for themselves (although they have nothing to do with the treatment), but don’t care about oxygen at all”.
“Meanwhile, the pulse oximeters are still sold freely, although at first they were sold very actively. This is a device that hangs on your finger and measures the level of oxygen saturation in the blood. By the way, there is an iPhone app with which you can also measure it, just download it, “said Bulavinova.
