Justice still illusory in May 2 case – United Nations Monitoring Mission
May 2 marks the sixth anniversary of the violence in Odessa, which claimed the lives of 48 people, but no one was held responsible for 48 deaths.
This was stated by Matilda Bogner, President of the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
“For the past six years, the families of the victims have fought for justice for the deaths of their loved ones. For the past six years, justice has remained ghostly, ”said Bogner.
The document, released today by the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, provides updated information on the status of investigations and trials regarding events in the city center and on Kulikovo Square Pole. The document also advises the government and the international community on new measures to ensure justice for the dead and murdered.
“Over the past year, there has been no significant progress in the investigation or prosecution. Regarding deaths in the city center, neither the investigation nor the prosecution has progressed since May 2, 2019. We also note a lack of progress in the investigation of deaths on the ground in Kulikovo. Nor have we seen significant progress in the criminal trials of police officers accused of having responded poorly to the clashes and riots, “said Bogner.
Nevertheless, progress has been made in the case of the former head of the State Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Odessa region, accused of abusing or endangering power or official authority, which the court gave priority. In the past 12 months, approximately 25 meetings have taken place.
Bogner called on the Ukrainian authorities to guarantee the responsibility of those responsible for the violence on May 2. She stressed that the Office of the Attorney General should ensure an effective, thorough and impartial investigation into murders and violent deaths, and that court presidents should give priority to criminal prosecutions in unfinished cases.
