Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that during his first conversation with his Italian counterpart, Luigi di Mayo, he paid close attention to the issue of the case against the National Guard, Vitaly Markiv.

“As for Markiv, I have occupied the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs for a month and I have spoken twice with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Italy. Once, exclusively on humanitarian aid, and during the first conversation with him, Vitaliy received very serious attention. And the President of Ukraine raised Question of Vitaly Markiv and his freedom in a conversation with the Italian Prime Minister, “said Kuleba.

In response to a question, sending Ukrainian doctors to Italy could have a positive effect on the decision in the Markiv case, the Minister for Foreign Affairs noted that humanitarian aid should not be stipulated by any concession in response.

“I think humanitarian aid should be provided because those with whom you sympathize are very sick and need your help,” he said.

On February 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister of the Italian Republic Giuseppe Conte discussed the case of Vitaliy Markiv.

A National Guard fighter was arrested in Italy in the summer of 2017, accused of being involved in the death of Italian photojournalist Andrea Rockelli on May 24, 2014 in the Slavyansk region of the Donetsk region.

On July 12, 2019, a Pavian court sentenced a Ukrainian to 24 years in prison. Markiv’s defense described the verdict as political and announced its intention to appeal. The lawyers later said that an appeal court decision was expected in the spring of 2020.

President Vladimir Zelensky has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the GPU to do everything possible to send Markiv back to his country of origin.
