French President Emmanuel Macron expressed condolences for the death in Mali of a Ukrainian Foreign Legion soldier Dmitry Martynyuk.

“The President of the Republic took with great regret the news of the death, on May 1, of the foreman (corporal – note) Dmitry Martynyuk at the military hospital of Percy de Clamar due to injuries caused by the rupture of a machine makeshift explosive. This happened on April 23 during an operation against terrorist groups in Mali, “said the report.

Macron expressed his sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased and assured France of solidarity in such tragic circumstances.

Condolences to the relatives of the deceased were expressed by the Minister of the Armed Forces of France, Florence Parley, personally and the department led by him as a whole, the command of the land forces, as well as the command and personnel of the regiment, in which the Ukrainian legionnaire served.

As we learned today, a soldier of the 1st armored regiment of the foreign legion Dmitry Martynyuk died in Mali, performing tasks during the anti-terrorist operation “Barkhan”. France holds it in the African Sahel region, which includes Mali, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Niger and Chad. The operation involved 6,000 soldiers.

Dmitry Martynyuk was born on August 28, 1991 in Khmelnitsky. He has been a member of the Foreign Legion since September 2015.

He is the second Ukrainian from the French Foreign Legion who died recently. On March 13, in Lebanon, following an accident, Vladimir Rybonchuk died, corporal of the 1st foreign engineering regiment as part of the United Nations Interim Mission (UNIFIL).
