MasterCard plans to issue a card to display an alternate customer name in Europe. The product was first introduced in the United States in 2019 and is primarily intended for representatives of the LGBT community. They can indicate the desired name on the map.

As Mark Barnett, President of MasterCard Europe points out, payment cards with an official name on them do not allow people to feel themselves. “We encourage our partners to be involved in creating a True Name Card in Europe so that we can make it easier for representatives of the transgender community to use their true identities,” Barnett said.

According to French inter-LGBT organization spokesman Clements Zamora-Cruz, MasterCard’s position is in line with community recommendations and with earlier requests by banks and financial companies to honor the identities of transgender people.
