The medical reform, in its current form, provides for the dismissal of around 50,000 medical workers and the closure of more than 300 hospitals.

This was announced during a briefing by Minister of Health Maxim Stepanov, reports a correspondent for Ukrinform.

“The medical reform we have received means the dismissal of around 50,000 medical workers. It plans to close 332 hospitals. This is all due to a lack of funding. If the situation is left to chance, then simple video messages on the dismissal of doctors and the doctors’ strike will become daily mass events. We do not let this injustice go, “said Stepanov.

He noted that the deficit is observed in 984 hospitals out of 1747, which have concluded an agreement with the National Health Service of Ukraine. According to the minister, most hospitals will receive less funding in 2020 than in 2019.

“If nothing changes, then millions of Ukrainians will be denied access to normal medical care. The rapid spread of diseases such as tuberculosis will begin,” said Stepanov.

He added that the Ministry of Health team is working to change the situation immediately. That there have been no massive layoffs of doctors and no closings of hospitals. This does not mean that the reform will be shortened, noted the minister, but on the contrary, it must be implemented, but substantially changed, taking into account Ukrainian realities and correcting mistakes made during planning.

As noted, in Ukraine on April 1, the second stage of medical reform began. He said health care facilities providing specialized (city, district hospitals) and highly specialized (hospitals and regional hospitals) medical care will receive funding under an agreement with the NHA.
