National Council reminds broadcasters of May 17-18 memory days
Ukraine will have two days of commemoration in May: May 17 commemorates victims of political repression and May 18 – victims of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people, so broadcasters should adjust their programs in this regard.
This is what the National Council for Television and Radio recalls.
“The National Council draws the attention of television and radio organizations to the need to modify these television and radio programs these days. When planning the broadcast on May 17 and 18, you must be guided by the rules for broadcasting on television and radio channels during the days of mourning (grief) and commemoration, approved by the decision of the National Council of July 23, 2015, ” said the press release.

The Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repression is celebrated each year on the third Sunday in May according to the President’s decree of May 21, 2007 with the aim of commemorating the memory of the victims of political repression, by drawing public attention to the tragic events in the history of Ukraine caused by the forced implantation of communist ideology.
The day of remembrance for the victims of the Crimean Tatars genocide is celebrated on May 18 – that day in 1944, the operation to deport the Crimean Tatars began (180,014 people were expelled during the main wave of expulsion from 18 to 20 May). It is also celebrated as the day of the struggle for the rights of the Tatar people of Crimea.
