Religious scholar does not rule out provocations from UOC-MP due to Easter restrictions

As part of the coronavirus pandemic, the Ukrainian authorities should use all available mechanisms in order not to endanger people during Easter services.

On this subject, in a comment to Ukrinform, said the doctor of philosophy, Ukrainian deputy of the 8th convocation Viktor Yelensky.

“If this is done for epidemiological reasons, it is not a restriction of religious freedoms. It is clear that this is a temporary measure. Here, the mayor of Dnipro Filatov is acting quite radical. Perhaps digging the entrance to the church seems absolutely shocking, but it is entirely justified. And the temples don’t close as well. Priests can perform the service online. What is stopping them from doing this? “, Stressed Yelensky.

According to the religious scholar, if the UOC-MP attempts to commit provocations, clashes on this basis, it will not receive wide support from society, except in a very limited segment.

“If these people are believers, if they are Christians, they should distinguish the signs. We show them very clearly that this should not be done. And the only way out for them is to ask their followers to stay at home. Of course, there are always those who do not want to obey. Well, in this case, the authorities, as stated in the Bible – “the rulers do not carry their swords in vain”, must apply the relevant standards of the law. And this is completely normal. It’s just that we’re so used to it that when he’s a pastor, not a single “mundane” law was written for him, “noted Yelensky.

At the same time, the expert noted that at the same time, the leaders of the UGCC and the PTsU “easily found the opportunity for believers to touch on the secret of Easter”.

“They have shown that under current conditions, it can be done. In addition, the church has used similar measures before, that is, under less favorable conditions, without the latest technology at hand. And now, flipping through Facebook, I see that people not only watch divine service shows, but also participate directly. It creates a feeling, certainly virtual, but of being in the temple, ”summarizes Yelensky.

As noted, the primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Epiphanes and the primate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Svyatoslav called on believers to celebrate Easter at home and not to endanger themselves or their loved ones.

At the same time, the head of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate Onufry said that believers can go to the churches where Easter services will take place.
