Stepanov commented on the decision of the mayors who decided to weaken the quarantine
The Ministry of Health says that the mayors of the cities in which they decided to reduce quarantine have not consulted the Ministry of Health and suggest that it is a political decision.
This was announced by Ukrainian Minister of Health Maxim Stepanov during a briefing on Monday, reports a correspondent for Ukrinform.
“What type of argument may have been given by the mayors of the cities – I don’t know. At least, they have not contacted us for consultations, nor for specialists in the field. Therefore, probably, it is of a purely political decision with a clear understanding that from May 11, everyone understands, and we have said it several times, we will propose the mitigation of quarantine measures, “said Stepanov, responding to a question about his attitude towards the initiatives of the mayors of Ukraine, weakening the quarantine regime even before the Cabinet decision.

In addition, he drew attention to the legal side of the matter.
“If we are talking about the legal part, then the law on infectious diseases clearly defines that the introduction of quarantine in the country is the only prerogative of the Cabinet of Ministers. Therefore, from a legal point of view, it is at least a violation of the law, because local authorities do not have such authority, “noted the Minister of Health.
Stepanov also explained how the Ministry of Health decides on the weakening of quarantine.
“When we talk about any weakening of the quarantine, I can tell you how it happens at the Ministry of Health. This decision is not based on a particular vision, relatively speaking, of civil servants. In order to propose such initiatives, the Ministry of Health brings together the specialists, epidemiologists, virologists concerned, we are examining international practices, how to get out of quarantine in different countries. And then, based on the advice of our experts, how and how exactly we can get out of quarantine, we are already making certain offers, ”said Stepanov.
He stressed that it was the right way.
As Ukrinform reported, Anatoly Bondarenko, the mayor of Cherkasy, was summoned for questioning on Monday May 4, as part of the decision to prematurely lift quarantine in the city.
