Swiss public prosecutor's office confirms criminal proceedings against former UEFA president

Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini

Swiss prosecutors have confirmed the opening of criminal proceedings against former UEFA president Michel Platini. The ex-official is suspected of having received a bribe from the ex-president of FIFA, Swiss Zepp Blatter, reports Sky Sport.

Earlier, FIFA had appealed to the Attorney General of Switzerland to ask him to resume the criminal case against Blatter. The former senior official is accused of corruption in the sale of broadcasting rights for the 2010 and 2014 World Cups in the Caribbean.

Recall that FIFA suspended Blatter for 8 years, as well as Platini of football activities for financial fraud. Note that they were threatened with a lifetime ban, which was eventually relaxed.

Last year, Platini was questioned by French prosecutors as part of the determination of the owner of the 2022 World Cup, but the French have not formally charged.
