The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine, after the publication of audio recordings on which the telephone conversations of former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and former Vice President Joe Biden were recorded, have opened criminal proceedings for high treason and abuse of power on May 20. A day earlier, these documents were made public by Andrei Derkach, deputy of the Verkhovna Rada.
From “Melnichenko Films” to “Derkach Films”
In the story of the publication of telephone conversations with voices similar to those of Poroshenko and Biden, not only are the notes themselves interesting, but the person who made them public. Andrey Derkach is a graduate of the KGB Higher School in Moscow, the son of the former head of the Ukrainian security services (SBU) Leonid Derkach.
Derkach Sr. in the early 2000s became accused of the “cassette scandal” when the so-called “Nikolai Melnichenko notes” were taken in the presidential cabinet. As a result, Leonid Derkach was forced to resign from the post of Chairman of the SBU, and Leonid Kuchma, accused of having participated in the murder of journalist Georgy Gongadze, fell under the strong influence of the Russian Federation.
The conversations of the country’s highest leaders in the Kuchma office, which were reportedly recorded by Melnichenko, unfortunately did not lead to massive landings of officials. The investigation first demanded a recording device from the former state security major, and then – finally insisted on identifying the voices echoing on the tapes – all was limited to a sentence of prison for journalist’s murderer, former lieutenant-general Alexei Pukach. Since then, not a single publication of audio recordings of conversations involving Ukrainian politicians has been grounds for resignation or criminal prosecution.
As a hereditary kegebist, Andrei Derkach fully understands how the scandal initiated by him can end. A rather confusing story about where he took the recordings of telephone conversations with voices similar to those of Poroshenko and Biden, is obviously intended for the simplets.
According to the son of the former head of the SBU, the information fell into the hands of investigative journalists and the recordings were made by the fifth president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in 2015-2016. One would think so without the past of Andrei and Leonid Derkach linked to the KGB. And if it were not the ex-president of Ukraine and the former vice-president of the United States in the electoral year of the American president.
What are Biden and Poroshenko accused of?
Andriy Derkach claims that the documents published by him testify to the influence of Joe Biden on Petro Poroshenko. We are talking about two episodes: the resignation of Attorney General Viktor Shokin, who was investigating the Burisma case, which involved the son of former US Vice President Hunter Biden, and the change of Ukrainian government in 2016. These were then grant Ukraine a billion dollar loan.
Derkach insists that in both cases we are talking about acts of international corruption, high-level high treason and external governance by the United States. Although these stories were known in 2018, when Joe Biden himself at the United States Foreign Relations Council spoke to the Kiev official about the ultimatum to release, as he says, the “motherfucker” Shokin .
Now Biden and Poroshenko deny all of Derkach’s accusations. Andrew Bates, spokesperson for the former US vice president, says the articles are undergoing major changes. Petro Poroshenko insists that the conversation was fabricated to discredit Ukraine, and it is a special operation of Russia with the participation of the administration of President Zelensky. The aim is to change the foreign policy vector of the Ukrainian state from the West to the pro-Russian. If this is the case, the participation of a graduate of the KGB higher school in this story seems entirely logical.
Clearly, the international review of audio recordings can end this scandal. If Poroshenko and Biden are not afraid of anything, what prevents them from trusting the specialists and proving that the recordings were made? The answer supposedly lies on the surface. But only if Poroshenko and Biden are sincere in their statements and have nothing to hide from the public.
Ukrainian footprint in American domestic politics
In the past four years, Ukraine has twice fallen into unpleasant stories related to American domestic politics. In 2016, during the presidential campaign in the United States in Kiev, fragments of the so-called “barn book” of the Party of Regions were published. They reportedly said that the head of Trump’s electoral headquarters, Paul Manafort, had received money for his services from Viktor Yanukovich’s team. As a result, Manafort was forced to resign and his boss, after winning the time, verbally insulted Kiev.
Three years after that, President Trump was accused of pressuring President Zelensky. A telephone conversation in which the current owner of the White House insisted on continuing the investigation of Biden’s son in Ukraine and made Kiev dependent on further aid, launched the impeachment mechanism for the President. Trump won. Lost Zelensky. It is significant that the office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has not accused the President of Ukraine of high treason. Although, probably, given Zelensky’s promises through “his” attorney, she could reconsider the case of Biden Jr.
In the third current scandal involving Ukraine, a blow was struck against Trump’s rival in the 2020 election campaign, Joe Biden. And, of course, according to political opponent Zelensky-Petro Poroshenko. Both are opposed to the authorities, both were and remain influential politicians in their country.
And the fact that the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine opened criminal proceedings after the publication of the audio recordings of Derkach, and that Vladimir Zelensky undertook to comment publicly on this case, indicates that the team of the current president Ukrainian tries to “suspend” Poroshenko for the treason case. It will be difficult to say whether or not the “servants” will be able to neutralize the fifth president of Ukraine. But the fact that the Zelensky administration can ruin relations with the American Democrats is obvious.
After all, the de facto Kiev official is on the side of Donald Trump today. And it wouldn’t turn out that after the presidential campaign, Vladimir Zelensky should apologize to Joe Biden. After all, it’s not just a relationship between two politicians. The issue is the relationship between the two countries, which one of the supporters of the American Republicans and Democrats in the confrontation with Russia is so necessary.
