The liquidation of the Department of Oversight of Special Law Enforcement Agencies of the Attorney General’s Office is not linked to the decision to close the investigation into the murder of activist Yekaterina Gandzyuk.

This was stated by the Attorney General Irina Venediktova on the Hromadske television channel on the Mokrik Alive program, reports a correspondent for Ukrinform.

“These cases (liquidation of the unit – note) are in no way linked to the case of Ekaterina Gandzyuk or another case. It is a normal process after optimization of the departments,” she explained.

At the same time, Venediktova objected that the prosecutors are now “in limbo”.

“This is now happening on a large scale and is not just about this case,” added the attorney general.

Previously, the initiative group “Who ordered Katya Gandzyuk?” reported that before the end of the investigation into the murder of Ekaterina Gandzyuk, the prosecutor general Irina Venediktova had liquidated on April 21 the department in which the prosecutors involved in the militant’s case worked.

Activists note that the decision to promptly close the investigation in the Gandzyuk case was taken only by Attorney General Irina Venediktova and that prosecutors were unable to oppose it.

As reported by Ukrinform, on April 27, the Prosecutor General’s Office and the SBU announced the end of the investigation in the case of the organization of an attack on Gandzyuk.

Activists, in turn, said that the case of the organization of an attack on activist Yekaterina Gandzyuk had been referred to the court by law enforcement authorities, without carrying out any investigations. The father of late activist Viktor Gandzyuk also criticized.

Activist Yekaterina Gandzyuk on July 31, 2018 sprayed with sulfuric acid near the entrance to her house in Kherson. The burns affected 40% of the woman’s body. Gandzyuk underwent several operations, but died on November 4 of the same year.

Five people were arrested on suspicion of being involved in his murder, and on November 12, 2018 it became known that Igor Pavlovsky, the former assistant to the people’s deputy Nikolai Palamarchuk, was arrested.

On February 11, 2019, the attorney general’s office announced to the head of Kherson regional council Vladislav Manger the suspicion of organizing the assassination of Gandzyuk. The court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention, but he went on bail of 2 million 497 thousand 300 hryvnias.

On June 6, 2019, five direct perpetrators of the attack were sentenced to 3 to 6.5 years in prison. In addition, in January this year in Bulgaria was arrested for organizing an attack on Gandzyuk Alexei Levin, deputy consultant to the deputy of the Kherson regional council. According to investigators, Levin is a key figure connecting artists (the “Torbin group”) and clients of Gandzyuk’s attack. It is he who is suspected of having organized this crime, incited its implementation, providing in particular information on the place of residence of Gandzyuk.

In March, the court extended the deadline to investigate the case against Levin on July 29.
