The Ukrainian sailor was captured and taken to an unknown destination following a pirate attack on the ship “Rio Mitong” off the coast of Equatorial Guinea.

This was announced to Ukrinform by the director of the Department of Consular Services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Pogoreltsev.

According to the diplomat, on May 10, information was received that near the port of Malabo (Equatorial Guinea) a pirate attack on the ship Rio Mitong was carried out (Comoros flag, the owner was the Belgian company SMART S&P SA, the operator of the vessel was SON COMMERCE INTERNATIONAL).

“According to preliminary information, following the attack, a Ukrainian citizen, a member of the ship’s crew, was captured and taken to an unknown destination,” said Pogoreltsev.

He said that the Ukrainian Embassy in Belgium is establishing contacts with the owner and the operator of the ship regarding the verification of this information and the clarification of the circumstances of the case.

In addition, the Embassy of Ukraine in Senegal, which is responsible for Equatorial Guinea, and the Embassy of Ukraine in Nigeria, which is the closest diplomatic institution to the scene, contacted the relevant local authorities to confirm the capture of a Ukrainian citizen.

“The case is under the control of the Ukrainian foreign diplomatic institutions concerned and the consular services department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” said Pogoreltsev.

As reported by Ukrinform, off the coast of Africa, unidentified men attacked a ship flying the flag of the Comoros and kidnapped two crew members, including one Ukrainian.
