The number of children in the colonies in ten years has decreased by 20 times
In the past ten years in Ukraine, the number of children in penal institutions has dropped from 2,000 to less than a hundred.
This was announced by the director of Agriteam Canada Consulting Ltd in Ukraine, the SURGe project manager, adviser to the Minister of Justice of Ukraine Taniya Sanford Ammar at an online press conference at Ukrinform.
“In 2009, 2,000 children were placed in penal establishments. And today in Ukraine there are only a hundred. And it is an excellent result of our work! “- stressed the expert.
According to her, since Ukraine implemented the recovery program for minors suspected of having committed a crime, the recidivism rate has dropped from 63% to 2%.
“Such a success is due to the fact that the child is sent to serve his sentence not in a specialized institution, but left in the community and try to work with him individually. It seems to me that this experience can be used in boarding schools, where around 100,000 children are in Ukraine, “said the Minister’s adviser.
She noted that 95% of students in Ukrainian boarding schools have parents, but are unable to support the children.

“Now, due to quarantine, they have been sent home, and we need to think about how to keep them at home and that their parents can support their children,” said Sanford Ammar.
According to her, for children who have committed crimes, the Ministry of Justice is developing alternative sanctions to punishment.
“After all, a person in a correctional institution is not really corrected, but on the contrary. And he starts from there with big socialization problems. The same thing happens with the child in the residential school, where at some point he stops developing because the child needs a family environment for his full development, “said Sanford Ammar.
