Both in Ukraine and in Russia, although there are incomparably more, the theme of historical memory is often artificially replaced by economic and political failures.

This opinion was expressed by the professor of the Ukrainian Catholic University Yaroslav Hrytsak during the online discussion “How does the historical past become an ideological present?”, Reports the correspondent of Ukrinform.

“The effect of the past 15-20 years is that we are poisoned by historical memory. This has not happened before. Our history is replaced by historical memory. Further on, more. I consider it to be is a specific disease, the only question in terms of poisoning is a toothache or cancer. My diagnosis for Ukraine is that it is a toothache. It’s boring, it hurts, but you You can live with it. What really scares me is Russia, where this level is a serious and prolonged illness. And it is dangerous not only for Ukraine, for itself Russia, but also for its neighbors, “said Gritsak.

He believes that one of the reasons that historical memory is so actively involved is that it evokes emotions and acts like a drug.

“The inclusion of Russian historical memory is compensation for the failure of political and economic reforms. This is a fig leaf – the more they get worse, the more they have a historical memory. My thesis is that history cannot be overcome not by renaming, not by monuments, although this is also necessary. And history is radically changing thanks to political and economic reforms. Relatively speaking, for me the creation of an independent court in Ukraine is much more important for overcoming history than for renaming. And I see this process everywhere with us because, wherever there is a new failure, we always keep this point in historical memory, ”said the historian.
