The Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Austria, Alexander Shcherba, paid tribute to the soldiers of the second and third Ukrainian fronts of the Soviet army who died during the liberation of Vienna in 1945.
The wreath laying ceremony and flowers at the monument to the liberating soldiers took place on the Schwarzenbergplatz square, reports the correspondent of Ukrinform in Austria.
“In recent years, we have participated with the community in laying flowers at the monument on Schwarzenbergplatz to pay tribute to the soldiers who gave their lives in the fight against Nazism. This year, unfortunately, it did not work in linked to the coronavirus pandemic, but an embassy wreath and flowers were personally deposited from me personally. We remember these dates, we remember the feat of our ancestors, we remember that these are the second and third Ukrainian fronts that liberated Vienna, “noted the Ukrainian ambassador.
The diplomat stressed that the liberation of Vienna was an important memorable event for his family, because his grandmother’s brother, the military driver Vasily Kukhar, participated in this military operation.
