There are several tests to identify people already immunized against the coronavirus - expert

It is important that Ukrainian doctors know the percentage of the population who have acquired immunity due to the coronavirus epidemic, and we await such tests.

This was stated in an interview with immunologist Ukrinform, assistant professor of pediatric infectious diseases and NMAPE pediatric immunology them. P.L. Shupika Fedor Lapiy.

“Today, there are several tests in the world. First of all, these are tests to determine the nucleic acids inherent specifically to this coronavirus, what is called PCR (polymerase chain reaction) … There are also rapid tests to determine the antibodies, they are not always informative, they sometimes give false results … Rapid tests should also detect the antigen in the lining of the upper respiratory tract, such as rapid tests for they’re starting to be used around the world, “said Lapiy.

And the third type of test, he says, is the detection of antibodies by enzyme immunoassay.

“You need equipment there. It is not an express technique. The ELISA method will give clearer results. In fact, we are waiting for them to understand what percentage of the population has received immunity. This may be individually controlled, “said the immunologist.

At the same time, he added that if we are talking about collective immunity, then for reliability it will be necessary to take a sample and conduct the so-called seroepidemiological studies.

“Seroepidemiological studies are the determination of antibodies using a scientific approach … a population sample must be made here to understand what percentage of the population has taken an asymptomatic COVID-19 course, and perhaps we have missed some patients – this will give more information and help understand what to expect in the future, “said Lapiy.

As reported, at 24 hours on April 24 in Ukraine, 7,647 laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19, of which 193 were fatal, 601 patients have recovered. 477 new cases were recorded per day.
