Today is International Children’s Day
Today, Ukraine and the world traditionally celebrate Children’s Day and World Parents’ Day.
Children’s Day was founded in 1949 by decision of the session of the International Democratic Federation of Women. It was first celebrated in 1950 in 51 countries around the world. In Ukraine Children’s Day is celebrated in accordance with the Presidential Decree of May 30, 1998.
The protection of children and their rights has always attracted the attention of the international community. This is particularly true of the twentieth century, because the attitude towards children at different times is not always the same and the need to protect them, their rights (the very concept of “right of the child” n does not even exist), society must go through a certain period of development in order to evolve. Today it may seem strange, but the attitude of the family and society towards the child, for example, in the Middle Ages and later, was not as respectful – the child n was not the object of excessive guardianship, preservation or worship – this was helped to some extent by high birth rates and high infant mortality. .
In the twentieth century, with the development of medicine, the advent of the last contraceptives, when no more than two children generally began to be born as a family, their attitude towards them also began to change. As early as 1924, the League of Nations adopted the Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child. At that time, children’s rights were seen primarily in the context of measures to be taken with regard to slavery, child labor and child trafficking.
In 1959, the United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which proclaimed social and legal principles regarding the protection and well-being of children. However, the Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child of 1924 and the Declaration of the Rights of the Child of 1959 are only of a declaratory and recommendatory nature, and specific international laws and treaties are necessary to protect and guarantee the rights of the child. Then the question arose of legislation relating to children’s rights.

On November 20, 1989, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, considered to be the world’s constitution for children. The struggle for the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was long and complex, and victory was not easy. Ukraine ratified the Convention on September 27, 1991 and, since then, this document has been part of national law.
June 1 is also celebrated as World Parents Day, proclaimed by United Nations General Assembly resolution 66/292 in 2012. As the name suggests, the Day is dedicated to parents around the world – women and men. The family has the main responsibility for the education and protection of children, for the complete and harmonious development of their personality which must necessarily occur in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding.
The General Assembly, in its resolution, invites Member States to celebrate World Parents Day in the context of a global partnership with civil society, in particular by involving young people and children.
