Today is International Nurses Day
Today is International Nurses Day. The date of May 12 was not chosen by chance – it is the birthday of charity sister Florence Nightingale.

For the first time, the idea of celebrating International Nurses Day appeared in 1953, but it was celebrated in 1965.
In 1974, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) officially decided to celebrate International Nursing Day on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) – Mercy’s English sister, organizer of the Sisters of Charity and the nursing education system in the UK. She was also the organizer and leader of the nursing team during the Crimean War of 1853-1856.
The International Council of Nurses (ICN), which is made up of more than 130 national associations, representing more than 16 million nurses worldwide, was created in 1899 and aims to improve the professional level of nurses and provide care quality nurses to all who need it, in addition, the council also works to ensure that there are professional nurses all over the world, and the prestige of this profession extremely necessary and at the same time difficult is reinforced. The organization’s headquarters are in Geneva.
Each year on this day, the Nursing Council prepares information materials, announces topics and the slogan for the celebration. This year marks 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale, so the ICN has declared this year the Year of Nurses and Midwives.

In addition, in 1912, the Red Cross created the Florence Natingale Medal, which is awarded every two years to graduate nurses for their unconditional dedication to their profession and their courage to help the wounded and sick, by wartime as well as peacetime. The first award took place on May 12, 1920, since then approximately 1,600 people have received the honorary award. Of these, 25 are Ukrainian nurses.
