Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition Returns to Kiev
The wintering team participants of the 24th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition returned to Ukraine after almost 13 months of work at Akademik Vernadsky station.
They flew to Borispol airport today on May 17 by an evacuation flight from Lisbon, reported the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science.
With them, the members of the seasonal detachment returned, who worked at the station for 3 months.
“We were concerned that under strict quarantine restrictions around the world, we would not be able to quickly repatriate our polar explorers. However, thanks to the work of the team of the National Academy of Sciences and the Ukrainian embassies in Chile, Brazil and Portugal, this problem has been solved. While a number of other countries have been forced to leave their shipments at stations until next year or put them on hold, “said Evgeny Dikiy, head of the National Antarctic Science Center at the Department of ‘Education and Science.
Note that the polar explorers left Akademik Vernadsky station on April 24. On May 2, after crossing the stormiest place on the planet – the Strait of Drake – the members of the expedition arrived at the port of Punta Arenas in Chile. Then, via Santiago, Sao Paulo, Lisbon returned to Ukraine.
