Ukrainians to hold ceremony in Berlin on 75th anniversary of Europe’s liberation from fascism
The Ukrainian embassy in Germany plans to hold a ceremony in memory of those who died during the Second World War in a memorial in Tiergarten park in Berlin on May 8, to which German and foreign friends have been invited.
This was said in an interview with Ukrinform by Ambassador Andrei Melnik.
“Despite the restrictions introduced due to the coronavirus pandemic, the national diplomatic mission in Berlin will also hold a ceremony on May 8 this year on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Europe from the brown plague”, a declared the diplomat.
He added that “it was this anniversary solemnity that would be a small breakthrough,” but he did not begin to reveal “the intrigue,” he suggested to wait.
Melnik recalled that the embassy in Berlin started a completely new format to honor the memory of Ukrainian victims of the Second World War in 2015. For the sixth consecutive year, the political leaders of Germany, members of the government, the members of the Bundestag, the leaders of Berlin and the lands of Brandenburg, as well as other lands, representatives of the diplomatic corps, the public, the German and national media, society and, are invited to the solemn event at the monument at Soviet soldier in Tiergarten park. Of course, veterans.
Before that, Russia had monopolized the right to organize the relevant ceremonies. The Russian Federation still holds its ceremonies, but on May 9 and near the Treptower Park memorial.

The Ambassador admits that 5 years ago, he could only dream that in such a short time the “Ukrainian” ceremony of May 8 would receive somewhat widespread recognition and support from the Berlin politicum, diplomats foreigners and, above all, the whole of German society. This is evidenced by the level of guests of honor at the ceremony, which increases each year.
“In fact, from scratch, we were able to create a new tradition of honoring the memory of the victims of Nazism, which is based on the memory of all the victims of Nazism, in particular the 8 million Ukrainians who died during the Nazi extermination war, “said the head of the diplomatic mission.
This year, the number of guests who will be simultaneously near the monument will be limited, said the embassy. According to the rules, no more than 50 people can be together on the site, they will keep a safe distance between them.
