US recognizes Huawei and ZTE as “National Security Threats”

US officials fear that Chinese telecommunications may cooperate with Chinese intelligence

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has officially named Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE national security threats. This means that American companies will not be able to use the $ 8.3 billion government subsidy program as a universal service fund to buy, service, or support any equipment or services from these two Chinese telecommunications giants.

The head of the FCC, Ajit Pai, said that the decisions concerned were made keeping in mind a large number of strong evidence. He also said that Chinese companies are subject to Chinese law, so they may need to cooperate with the country’s intelligence services.

The United States is carrying out large-scale campaigns against Chinese television giants. Last year, Huawei was blacklisted in the United States, and a new law was passed in May, aiming to cut the company completely off the supply of semiconductors. In addition, US officials are urging other countries to abandon cooperation with Huawei.
