Internet should be accelerated on its own

Wi-Fi rules, light switches, and fraudulent banners: how to speed up the internet during quarantine

Millions of people around the world have spent most of their lives relocating to the web – work, shopping and entertainment are now only available via the Internet. But will the World Wide Web face such a load? So far it can cope, but the mass increase in traffic is of no consequence: despite the “shrinking” of video content, many notice a slowdown or interruption in the network.

But everything is not so bad, because you can improve your internet speed and reduce glitches on your own. At the very least, you can contribute to the fight to protect connections during the quarantine period, as inconsistent behavior and improper use of network resources play a key role in connection conditions.

To begin, experts recommend not using a Wi-Fi connection if possible, replacing it by connecting the equipment directly via cable. Unfortunately, some are prepared to take such an uncomfortable measure, so if Wi-Fi is used at home, you should follow the following points:

  1. The router should not be placed on the floor, because in this case part of the lion’s Wi-Fi waves will go directly to the neighbors, directly bypassing the destination. It is best to keep the router as high as possible and close to the wall.
  2. You do not need to turn the router on or off continuously, this device must work continuously.
  3. If a router has multiple antennas, it is better to install them in one direction and at different positions: one can be placed vertically, the other horizontally. This will improve the transmission signal.
  4. The operation of the router and Internet speed are unexpectedly affected by many devices. They include cordless telephones, halogen lamps, baby monitors, light switches that control brightness, as well as stereo systems and computer speakers, monitors, and even a regular indoor TV. Most routers operate at a frequency of 2.4 GHz, which, by an unpleasant coincidence, is the frequency of many home appliances – microwaves, Bluetooth, and more. This is why it is important to separate the router from other devices as much as possible.

When the operation of the router is set up and the external expense of precious waves is limited, it is worth remembering that user behavior often serves as the deciding factor in connection speed cases. For example, some people have a habit of disconnecting mobile devices that are not currently in use. But in vain, as most of them consume the Internet even in sleep mode.

For such popular video conferencing times during remote work, it is better to turn off the video, and the call itself should be assigned to an unpopular time – for example, 13 hours 17 minutes. No 8–10 in the morning or 6 in the evening.

Many browsers are equipped with a very useful mode, the so-called Turbo. For example, such browser functions significantly speed up compressing images, reducing load and load on the network. The option works great when viewing news feeds on many social networks.

Another point is background software updates due to network congestion and crashes. Usually the process runs automatically and is invisible to the user – recommended to fix it. If possible, automatic updates should be disabled and this problem should be dealt with manually. At the same time, it would not be an exaggeration to check the PC for viruses that may also carry traffic behind a user’s back.

And finally, most importantly – ads on most sites slow down the home internet like nothing else. Banners, posters, and advertisements and advertising videos can capture about 70% of the traffic spent on page loading, and despite the fact that often no one sees them. To eliminate this tragic event, simply go to your browser settings and enable the ad blocking function, commonly referred to as “adblock”.
