Without the UPR struggle, there would be no independent Ukraine – the Polish historian
The alliance of Simon Petliura and Jozef Pilsudski in 1920 ended in defeat, but without these many years of struggle, the UPR today could not have been independent Ukraine.
This was stated in an interview with Ukrinform by a Polish historian, an employee of the Polish National Memory Institute Miroslav Shumilo.
“As a historian, I think that without this struggle that Petlyura fought, there would have been no Ukrainian state today,” said the Polish historian.
According to him, despite the fact that the union of Pilsudski and Petliura ended in defeat, he played a positive role. The scientist drew attention to the fact that the general of the Polish army Tadeusz Kutzheba wrote in his memoirs on the joint campaign against Kiev: “The Ukrainian blood of the troops of Ataman Simon Petliura was not in vain . It has proved to Poland, Russia and the world that Ukraine is trying to live, it is a success forever. “
Shumilo noted that this Polish general already in the thirties of the last century drew attention to what Ukrainian historians are talking about today: without these many years of struggle for independence, without the Ukrainian revolution at the time, Ukraine would probably not exist now.
According to him, the creation of Ukraine in 1920 would be possible without these military errors, plus the lack of time for the training of the Ukrainian army.
As the historian notes, the 1920 Polish-Bolshevik War should be called the Polish-Ukrainian-Bolshevik War.

“This is true because, first, the UPR was the official ally of Poland, and second, this army was the only strong allied formation. This war should be called the Polish-Ukrainian-Bolshevik war, since the The April 1920 offensive was organized to liberate Ukraine. “It was a war for Ukraine and for Poland, because the two states were fighting for independence at the time,” said the Polish historian.
